Prof. Dr. Grégory Francois holds a Chemical Engineering degree (1998) from the French National Chemical Engineering School in Nancy (ENSIC) and a MSc degree (1998) from the French National Polytechnic Institue of Lorraine (INPL). In 2004 he obtained a PhD in Control and Optimization from the Automatic Control Laboratory of the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology of Lausanne (EPFL) and in 2014, a Habilitation Thesis (Habilitation à Diriger des Recherches) from the University of Lorraine, France. Before joining HES-SO Valais Wallis, he has occupied several academic positions among which Senior Research Associate and Lecturer at EPFL, Maitre de Conferences (Assistant Professor) at the University of Perpignan in France and more recently (until 2020) Associate Professor (Senior Lecturer) at the University of Edinburgh, where he is still invited faculty. His research interest include but are not limited to: systems modelling, control and optimization, optimal control theory and practice, real-time optimization, process systems engineering, with application to energy systems (fuel cells, kites, […]), chemical processes (polymerization processes, […]), bioprocesses and biochemical engineering, […]. He conducted many research projects in collaboration with other universities and industrial companies, most often in the fields of modelling, control and optimization. With his past supervisors, past and present colleagues, postdocs fellows and PhD students he created and developed two innovative real-time optimization approaches (namely NCO-tracking and Real-Time Optimization via Modifier Adaptation) at both the fundamental, methodological levels and applied them in collaboration to various simulated, experimental and industrial systems and processes.
