Samuel Rey-Mermet was born in 1977, in Fontainemelon (Canton Neuchâtel, Switzerland). He has obtained a Msc in Materials Science in March 2003 and a PhD both at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne (EPFL). During his PhD he has developed microfabricated solide oxide fuel cells by combining the silicon micromachining techniques with novel ceramics materials in form of thin films at the Ceramics Laboratory at EPFL. After his thesis, he has worked 6 years as engineer at the Innovation and Development unit at HYDRO Exploitation SA in Sion (Canton Valais, Switzerland). He was then in charge of risk analysis and investment optimization for hydroelectric power plants in collaboration with the assets managers (Alpiq, SBB, EWZ and FMV) and of fitness for purpose analysis of mechanicals components such as pipelines, penstocks, shafts, turbine and rotors. Since September 2015, he is professor at the HES-SO Valais-Wallis in the field of powder metallurgy (metal and ceramic injection molding and ceramics additive manufacturing) but stays active in the optimization of the durability of energy production assets.
