Thursday 13 October 2022 12:00 - 12:45

The Axe Santé is organising a Health Tech Lunch on Thursday, October 13th from 12:00 to 12:45 at Swiss Digital Center in Sierre (room Atlas).

Gabor Mark Somfai, MD, PhD, Senior consultant, Spross Research Fellow, Stadtspital Zürich, Department of Ophthalmology

A graduate of Semmelweis University, Dr. Somfai completed his PhD and residency training and obtained his venue legendi in Budapest, Hungary. His main clinical and research interest lies in the imaging of retinal diseases, with a special emphasis on diabetes-related retinal changes and the investigation of retinal structure/function in health and disease. After a one-year research assistant professorship at the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute in the USA in 2014 he moved to Switzerland where he is currently working as a senior consultant and Spross Research Fellow at the Department of Ophthalmology at Stadtspital Zürich.

Being an idealist, one of his favorite quotes is: “We choose to go to the Moon (…) not because it is easy, but because it is hard."

Abstract

“The eye is as a window to the soul” - along with the retina thanks to its unique optical and developmental properties. The widespread treatment possibilities of devastating retinal diseases pose a high burden on healthcare systems worldwide due to their high costs and frequent patient visits.

This talk will focus on some aspects of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in Ophthalmology, mainly in the screening, diagnosis and treatment of retinal pathologies using imaging techniques. We will also take a short excursion towards using AI and retinal imaging as a window to the brain and also the human body within the framework of oculomics.

By the end of this Tech Lunch you should get an overview of some unmet needs in Ophthalmology.

Be prepared to get faced with the following questions:

How can a clinician interpret results from AI?

Can the results reported by an AI be trusted?

Will AI algorithms replace the ophthalmologists in most aspects of their work?

Programme:

  • 12:00 am to 12:45 pm : Presentation
  • 12:45 pm to 13:30 pm : Lunch in the cafeteria
