The City-Stories project presented at HistoInformatics'17

The Data Semantics Lab of the Institute of Information Systems attended the 4^th International Workshop on Computational History (HistoInformatics'17) workshop held in Singapore from 6^th to 10^th of November, in conjunction with 26th ACM International Conference on Information and Knowledge Management CIKM 2017.  

Our lab member Shaban Shabani attended this conference and presented the paper titled “City-Stories: A Hybrid Multimedia and Entity Retrieval System for Historical Data". This paper is a joint work between research groups at HES-SO Valais-Wallis (Data Semantics Lab), University of Fribourg (eXascale InfoLab) and University of Basel (DBIS Research Group).  

City-Stories is a novel system that combines content-based similarity search on both historical and contemporary multimedia data with spatio-temporal queries and that exploits semantic analysis of the content for entity recognition and linking. The City-Stories has been deployed in a tourist application where cultural heritage content from archives and memory institutions is complemented with content contributed by users through a crowdsourcing approach.

The Histoinformatics as an interdisciplinary workshop signifies a prestigious gathering that brings together research-oriented practitioners of the historical disciplines, computer science and cultural heritage sector, in a unique collaborative environment. This was an excellent prospect to present our work, attend learning-focused sessions and develop forthcoming networking opportunities.
