Swissgrid will finance a new project about the future of electrical grids at the Institute of Sustainable Energy over the four coming years.
The project will form the core of the PhD thesis of Koen Van Walstijn, PhD candidate in theoretical physics in the research team of Prof. Philippe Jacquod. He will be focusing on the statistical analysis of future power grids in order to find answers to the following questions: How will electric grids work after the replacement of nuclear power plants by new renewable energy sources? Will power grids need to be reinforced? How will their operation differ from today?
This is the first common project of Swissgrid and the HEI.
