Placement tests

The Language Center administers adaptive placement tests (levels A1 – C2) for schools who organize language courses which are not for complete beginners. The purpose of testing is diagnostic: it assesses students' current language abilities in order to match them to a course at the most suitable level. Accurate initial placement is a key factor in successfully learning a foreign language. At the same time, it allows the language teacher to adapt course content and method to the level of the students.

The HES-SO organizes language placement test for schools in the following languages:

English
French
German
Italian
Spanish
Dutch
Portuguese

The Placement test takes place online and lasts approximately 1 hour. It evaluates the following 5 skills: grammar, vocabulary, communicative situations, listening comprehension and reading comprehension. It has proven to be a valid and reliable evaluation of a candidate’s initial language level.
