GPU-smartphone applications that evaluates multispectral images of skin lesions and provides the user with feedback about the likelihood of malignancy

Melanoma represents a public health problem that has increased in recent years. In 90% of cases, early detection leads to a successful treatment of the disease. In this project, we realize a melanoma screening device which should be inexpensive and easy-to-use for everyone. A smartphone application should guide the user through the diagnostic process. With a multispectral optic, which is connected via USB, the user can create images of his epidermis. By varying the wavelength, the melanoma can be photographed in different skin depths. The sequence of images is then analyzed in a cloud. Graphics processors, which are specialized in the rapid processing of mathematical processes are used for the automatic extraction of melanoma representing visual characteristics. An auxiliary system informs the user of the degree of malignancy. When in doubt, a dermatologist can be involved in the decision making process.
