Surprise du Cerveau

The AppiTech Lab participated to the success of the public VR conference “Les surprises du cerveau” organized in the framework of the WorldXRForum 2019 in Crans-Montana. Our main task was to synchronise 386 VR headsets (Samsung Gear VR) to play VR content created by the Italian company Immersio. As result, all attendees were able to navigate inside a virtual brain simultaneously with live explanation.

My Virtual House

The AppITech lab partnered with Bureau des Métier and Assocation Valaisanne des Entrepreneurs to develop a Serious Game to promote construction trades to younger generations using XR technologies. With demographic changes and drop of interest from the younger generation, some trades such as construction trades have difficulties to find workforce replacement. My Virtual House is a serious game to learn about construction trades using Virtual Reality. This game has 5 steps including (1) networking with companies; (2) VR immersion in trades using 360 videos; (3) building your own virtual house in VR (4) sharing the output of construction on social network; (5) watching a virtual house being printed in 3D.

Culture and awarness raising

The AppITech lab was approached by the History Museum of Basel to develop an interactive visit of a temporary exhibition about Erasmus. Visitors can discover the life and writings of Erasmus with a tablet or smartphone. A didactic tour lasting about an hour has been devised in public and semi-public areas of the city of Basel and an augmented reality exhibition in the museum. The images of the outside world and the contents of the application merge to form virtual or augmented reality, depending on the location of the visitor. To take this tour, participants need a smartphone with Bluetooth and the free application "Erasmus MMXVI". They can also borrow pre-configured devices at the start of the tour. Within the museum, the enhanced content can be viewed on tablets or smartphones equipped with Google Cardboards.

MOBNET

The evolution of current wireless access networks towards the fifth generation (5G) will be characterized by network densification, typically achieved through the deployment of many static small cell base stations (BSs). However this approach implies huge investments on behalf of mobile network operators (MNOs), while increasing the amount of over-provisioned network resources, with poor return on investments for MNOs.The main goal of the MOBNET project is to perform a first evaluation of the potential of strategies which mitigate the need for ultra-dense BS deployments through the joint use of vehicle-mounted small cell base stations, for bringing the antennas closer to the users, and of algorithms for dynamic network management, which adapt the configuration of the network to traffic demand and to the available infrastructure. The outcomes of MOBNET will help assessing the potential of moving network paradigm for enabling cost-effective and efficient bandwidth provisioning in soon-to-be 5G networks, laying out the premises for the elaboration of new instruments for design and performance evaluation of 5G access networks.

Scaling ADS Management to large Swarms (ScaleADS)

The goal of the project is to make the thermal and electrical flexibility of a high number (10.000-100.000) of Active Demand & Supply (ADS) units (e.g. households) economically available to energy utilities. In order to achieve this, a virtual power plant (VPP) is constructed. Energy utilities should be able to use such a VPP directly on the different markets. The main difficulty in the project is to scale up existing optimization methods in order to be able to work with a high number of heterogenous ADS units.

AOptimA : A semantic-based decision support system for prediction and optimization of purchases in pharmaceutical distribution

The market for medicines and parapharmacy is composed of many intermediary actors. Currently, information about the best trading conditions on the market is very difficult to access, hence pharmacies do not have a way of comparing their direct purchases. This project aims to create a decision support system for pharmacies in order to reduce their procurement costs and thus lower product prices that could in the end benefit for the patient. One important objective is to integrate and analyze the natural multilingual text from different formats and sources. Relying on semantic technologies, we transposed the complexity of current processes into a central system capable of managing the heterogeneity and large volume of information sources to ensure the velocity of the information system. The use of ontologies made it possible to determine unambiguously the nature of the links between the different data, and to build our own knowledge bases for sharing and reusing them later. Meanwhile, our semantic search engine allowed users to provide the synonyms based on the contextual meaning of words, it improved the search accuracy, and generated more relevant results.

Rodin (ROue D‘INformation) is a project that aims to develop an innovative tool for the bundling and coupling of user relevant information sources. Information specialists and simple users will be able to gather those information ressources that are interesting for their work or in relation with their personal interests in a dynamic and user friendly information aggregate. The tool includes a search engine that allows simultaneous search in all components of the aggregate as well as a search that starts from the result of a preceding search.
