The Institute of Energy and Environment is committed to the development of a sustainable economy and society with a particular focus on the energy transition.

The institute’s activities include applied research and development (R&D), the provision of services and continuing professional development. Working closely with public, industrial and private partners, the institute addresses the political, economic and social challenges facing the region and the environment as a whole.

Digitalization underpins the institute’s approach – an approach that draws on the technical, digital, business and social expertise of the partner schools involved. The institute’s main areas of focus are energy efficiency, renewable energy and energy storage. Its aim is to design and develop practical, innovative solutions for energy management.

A small team of around 100 qualified and experienced staff working with local, national and international partners conduct close to 150 research projects each year. The institute puts its expertise to work across a wide range of bold research projects and has made many advances in the design of efficient, sustainable energy systems and networks.
