Production of candidate materials for biomedical applications and evaluation of their biocompatibility

Titanium alloy-based parts will be processed by powder injection moulding and uniaxial pressing at the Insitut of Systems Enginnering. Ti Grade 4 (dense and porous), Ti6Al4V, TiNb and NiTi alloys will be used. New powder metallurgy specimens with improved surface condition and purity will be delivered to the Institute of Life Techonologies for ISO10993 biocompatibility tests (agar-overlay and extraction tests), cytotoxicity tests and ion release evaluation by ICP-EOS techniques.

Cell growth on surfaces and ingrowth in pores will be observed by SEM. To consolidate the competences of both Institutes in this field is of strategic importance to launch new projects with partners in the medical and dental sectors.
