René Schumann studied computer science at the Carl von Ossietzky University of Oldenburg, Germany. After a stop at the R&D division business information management at the OFFIS Institute for Information Technology, Oldenburg, he worked at the Goethe University, Frankfurt am Main, where he received his PhD. in 2010, focusing on the coordination of autonomous planning systems. Afterwards, he was a DAAD Post-doc researcher at the National Institute of Informatics, Tokyo, Japan. In 2011 he joined the University of Applied Science Western Switzerland (HES-SO), where he holds a professor position since 2012.

In 2013 he founded the Smart Infrastructure Laboratory, which he still leads.

The group focus its research on quantitative methods, in particular optimization (centralized & decentralized) and agent-based simulation techniques for smart infrastructures, in particular energy and mobility systems.

Areas of activity span from optimizing urban logistics systems to reduce emissions in logistic systems, to the creation of digital-twins of highways in Switzerland. At the intersection between economics and agent-based modeling, the SILab group is today among the leading groups in Switzerland.

Projects of the SiLab group have been funded by several national research grants, e.g. from the Swiss National Science Foundation, Innosuisse and the Swiss Federal Office of Energy. Prof. Schumann has been involved in national energy research initiatives like SCCER CREST and SWEET CoSI.

Furthermore, he is the deputy manager of SGAICO, the Special Interest Group for Artificial Intelligence and Cognitive Science, which is the dedicated group for AI researchers in the Swiss Informatics society. He has served on the scientific advisory boards of TA Swiss, as well as being a member of the Steering Committee for the Energy Informatics Conference Series.
